Protective packaging for new potatoes

New potatoes are creamier and sweeter than normal potatoes and after a long winter, a welcome treat in stores. But they need careful protection to preserve their welcome place on the dinner table.

Pacsystem in Helsingborg, Sweden know this better than anyone as experts in packing crops correctly. The company arose by helping small growers consolidate packaging orders and make big savings with bulk purchases.

Challenge: 2 times the moisture

Any pack developed for new potatoes needs to battle moisture on two fronts: from the potatoes themselves and also the rain and dew that come from packing your product in the middle of a field.
“DS Smith is in charge of corrugated board and barrier technology. We have been working with them for a long time, and when we searched for better packaging for fresh potatoes it was obvious to turn to them. They have an assortment of barriers that no one else can offer,” said Lars Mårtensson, Customer Manager.

Our Approach: 4 times stronger!

DS Smith coated the new potato case with a waterproof barrier on both the liner and the fluting to effectively withstand all moisture attacks. Tests show that it is up to four times stronger than packaging previously offered on the market and with improved durability, you also get a more cost-effective packaging. At the same time, Pacsystem offers its customers a package that looks good and is well received both at the retailers and at the end consumer – who can now enjoy fresh potatoes that taste fresh from the field – as they should! In addition, the packaging is completely recyclable ensuring it meets consumer expectations about sustainability

The result: All around great performance

  • A lightweight pack that has the strength to survive difficult conditions
  • Great protection for a fragile product
  • Lower costs as packaging isn’t damaged before or during the transport
  • A sustainable solution that can be fully recycled
