Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certifies packaging company SIG against both ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard

SIG is the first carton packaging company to be certified against both of ASI’s Standards, with a focus on the material stewardship of the aluminium layer in aseptic packs. Aseptic packaging is widely used to store food, beverages and pharmaceutical liquids for long periods without refrigeration. The ultra-thin aluminium layer provides the critical barrier against oxygen and light to support extended shelf life of these products.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced the fifth company and second downstream user of aluminium to become ASI Certified. The ASI Performance Standard focuses on ‘material stewardship’ for Industrial Users, addressing issues such as product design, life cycle assessments, management of process scrap and collection and recycling of products at end-of-life. SIG is a leading systems and solutions provider for aseptic packaging and is now also the second company in the world to be certified against the ASI Chain of Custody Standard. SIG has achieved certification to the ASI Performance Standard Material Stewardship Principle at the corporate level at their head office in Switzerland as well as their main corporate units in Germany, together with ASI Chain of Custody certification at these locations and one of its key production sites in Saalfelden, Austria.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The independent, third-party audits of SIG were carried out by DNV GL.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “We are delighted to congratulate SIG on their dual ASI Certification, the first downstream company to do so. Aluminium is a key raw material for the packaging sector, who have been important supporters of ASI since its inception. Material stewardship and product recycling principles are of critical importance in such a consumer-oriented sector. In seeking ASI Certification, SIG have been highly focused on both their own performance and that of their supply chains, and we commend them on their drive to this achievement.”

“Achieving this certification enables SIG to lead the industry in offering carton packs made with ASI-certified aluminium foil from now on” Samuel Sigrist, Chief Financial Officer at SIG. “Customers can already put the FSC™ logo on any of our packs to show that the paper board comes from sustainable forests and responsible sources. This new certification for aluminium will further enhance the environmental credentials of our cartons.”

ASI Certification process

ASI’s Standards apply throughout the supply chain, from mining through to downstream sectors that use aluminium in their products. All current ASI members in the ‘Production and Transformation’ and ‘Industrial Users’ classes will be working towards their own ASI certifications in the coming two years. ASI Members are listed at https://aluminium-stewardship.org/about-asi/current-members/

ASI’s custom-built online assurance platform, elementAl underpins the entire certification workflow for both the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard. First, elementAl’s user-oriented interface and workflows support the prospective company during the initial self-assessment phase and data is protected by a secure firewall. When ready, the company then makes their relevant elementAl information accessible to their chosen auditor. Auditors use elementAl to support audit planning, on-site verification and reporting. ASI reviews submitted audit reports for conformity with ASI’s assurance procedures as a final control, before the certification approval and certificate(s) are issued. Full ASI certification is valid for three years, usually with a surveillance audit at approximately 18 months.
